Current & Anticipated Opportunities

As NM Consulting responds to active opportunities and competitive solicitations, we periodically seek qualified professionals to support specific scopes of work. These opportunities are typically project-based and may be contingent upon contract or funding award.

  • About the Role
NM Consulting is seeking a Senior Strategy Research & Synthesis Consultant to support a large-scale, international strategic planning engagement for a scholarly association. This role is ideal for a seasoned researcher or strategist who excels at making sense of complexity, synthesizing large volumes of qualitative and quantitative input, and translating analysis into clear, decision-ready insights.

This is not an entry-level research role and not administrative project management. The consultant will work closely with NM Consulting’s Principal and a Senior Academic Advisor to support rigorous analysis, benchmarking, and synthesis—freeing senior leadership to focus on strategy, governance, and client leadership.

    Key Responsibilities
    Research & Environmental Scanning

    • Conduct environmental scans related to:

      • Academic and scholarly associations

      • Membership-based international organizations

      • Governance, sustainability, and revenue diversification trends

    • Review relevant literature, reports, and strategic plans from peer and aspirational organizations

    • Support benchmarking analysis (qualitative and high-level quantitative indicators)

    Data Synthesis & Analysis

    • Analyze survey data and structured stakeholder input

    • Synthesize interview and focus group findings into clear themes, tensions, and opportunities

    • Identify patterns, tradeoffs, and strategic implications across diverse stakeholder groups

    • Support development of decision frameworks and strategic options

    Strategic Drafting Support

    • Draft background sections, analysis summaries, and synthesis memos

    • Support development of:

      • Strategic priorities and goal statements

      • High-level implementation frameworks

      • Practical KPIs and sequencing logic

    • Prepare materials that allow senior leadership to focus on refinement rather than first-draft creation

    Collaboration & Quality Control

    • Work closely with NM Consulting’s Principal Consultant

    • Coordinate selectively with the Senior Academic Advisor for alignment

    • Ensure analytical rigor, clarity, and consistency across deliverables

    • Maintain organized documentation and research references

    Ideal Candidate Profile
    We are seeking someone with:

    • 7+ years of experience in:

      • Strategy research

      • Policy analysis

      • Academic or institutional research

      • Management consulting or think-tank environments

    • Strong analytical and synthesis skills—able to turn complexity into clarity

    • Experience supporting strategic planning, organizational assessments, or governance work

    • Comfort working independently with minimal oversight

    • Excellent writing skills, particularly for executive and governance audiences

    • Familiarity with higher education, scholarly associations, or international organizations is strongly preferred

Spanish language proficiency is a plus but not required.

What This Role Is (and Is Not)
    This role is:

    • Analytical

    • Insight-driven

    • Strategic-support focused

    • Designed to expand senior leadership bandwidth

    This role is not:

    • A junior research assistant position

    • A pure project management role

    • A facilitation or client-facing lead role

    Why This Role Matters
This engagement requires disciplined thinking, rigorous analysis, and high-quality synthesis. The Senior Strategy Research & Synthesis Consultant plays a critical role in ensuring the strategic plan is grounded in evidence, responsive to stakeholder input, and ready for governance-level decision-making.

  • About the Opportunity
NM Consulting is assembling a senior advisory bench in support of a potential strategic planning engagement with a large, international scholarly association focused on Latin American studies. We are seeking a highly respected academic or academic-adjacent leader to serve as a Senior Advisor, providing subject-matter expertise, contextual guidance, and strategic insight throughout the planning process.

This role is advisory, not operational. The Senior Advisor will not be responsible for day-to-day project management or facilitation but will help ensure that the strategy, engagement design, and final outputs reflect the realities, norms, and evolving needs of global scholarly communities.

    Role & Responsibilities
    The Senior Advisor will:

    • Provide strategic guidance on issues affecting academic and scholarly associations, including governance, membership dynamics, academic publishing, and international engagement

    • Review and provide feedback on:

      • Engagement approach and stakeholder design

      • Draft strategic priorities and frameworks

      • Governance and organizational recommendations

    • Offer perspective on U.S., Latin American, and global academic contexts, including equity, access, and representation

    • Serve as a credibility partner for NM Consulting when appropriate (e.g., proposal bios, limited stakeholder touchpoints)

    Ideal Background
We are particularly interested in individuals with:

    • Senior leadership experience within:

      • Academic associations

      • Research institutes

      • Area studies organizations

      • Higher education governance bodies

    • A strong understanding of:

      • Scholarly communities and academic ecosystems

      • Membership-based international organizations

      • Issues facing Latin American and/or Global South academic networks

    • Prior experience with:

      • Strategic planning or organizational transformation

      • Governance or executive councils

      • International or multilingual academic environments

    • Ability to provide high-level, strategic insight rather than operational execution

Spanish and/or Portuguese language proficiency is a plus but not required.

    Why This Role Is Unique

    • Senior-level influence without operational burden

    • Opportunity to shape the long-term direction of a globally respected scholarly organization

    • Flexible, advisory-only time commitment

    • Collaboration with a boutique consulting firm that values rigor, integrity, and thoughtful process design

    Engagement Structure

    • Contracted as an independent advisor

    • Clear scope and boundaries

    • No expectation of exclusivity

    • No conflict of interest with current association leadership or prior strategic planning efforts (required)
